CANON POINT: The most recent chapter available as of writing this, so chapter 234! CANON INFORMATION: The Haikyuu wiki! and Kenma's page in specific! PERSONALITY: Kenma is socially anxious - and that shapes, or at the very least, influences, a lot of his traits. A good bit of this actually just comes from a distaste for social heirarchies; he complains early on about how, back in middle school, the lower-year volleyball club members got bossed around by the seniors. He prefers to see people as equals, and this shows with his casual relationships with all his teammates, regardless of their years. He's also fine with calling the main character of the story by his first name basically as soon as they meet, despite them being rivals and in different years. Kenma gets nervous when he gets too much attention. His character background consists of him monologuing about how he is hyper-aware of other people, and afraid of standing out. He also comments that his hair is so long because if his field of vision is too wide, he feels nervous. That's also why he has out-grown bleached hair - his friends said his hair stood out (referring to its length) so he misunderstood and dyed it. Oddly, given his rambunctious teammates, it actually does make him fit in with them better. When he's relaxed, he's a mellow kid. He likes to play video games and he's lazy. He's not above bickering with his bestie, Kuro, but mostly just wants to have mellow conversations and get out of practice as much as he can. He's loyal to his friends and willing to do things he doesn't necessarily want to (or doesn't want to admit he wants to) if it's for someone he cares about. In a grand sense. He stuck with volleyball for his friend, even when they couldn't play together, just because he was told to. He's in his second year of high school and his teammates all comment that him expressing interest in a match the next day is a shocking level of enthusiasm. That said, he still won't put in extra practice time with his best friend and would like to avoid some of his louder teammates even after bonding with them. Maybe in response to being nervous, Kenma is very analytical by nature. During games his team thinks of him as the 'brain' and listens to a lot of his shot-calling, and they're strong for it - where his team back in middle school who wouldn't listen to an underclassman was missing out. The team's strength is not getting flustered and having solid teamwork. He can be known to miss details by focusing too hard on others, shown by an OVA where he doesn't figure out the trick to beating a boss fight on his anime-knock-off-PSP until Kuro tells him. He's definitely opened up a lot since his sitting-alone-all-the-time middle school days, and despite whatever fear of judgment he has, he's comfortable sassing his friends...! But just as prone to hiding out in a corner on his cell phone if there are too many people around. Or if he's alone. Also sometimes he still hides behind friends if someone is glaring at him too intently but LOOK TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET OKAY. Meeting Shouyou has kindled some competitive spirit in Kenma, but. He's a far-cry from the passionate guys the rest of the series follows. Even when he's more comfortable, he isn't very expressive? His most common expressions look nervous and he doesn't smile much, even when he's happy. ABILITIES: He's... Good with technology and has good hand-eye coordination! And good stamina, from playing sports. He also has good spacial recognition and aim. He's... Smart??? INVENTORY: His jersey outfit, and his school backpack, host to his PSP, DS, cell phone, and other miscellaneous school items.
